Grace and Beauty

tharp_080801-26822

I’m on an Alaska theme currently – but that’s because I’m editing my huge collection of images from all my past photo tours I’ve led on the M/V Delphinus with Dolphin Charters. It’s been an incredible journey – the whole of it – in all parts of southeast Alaska, aka the Inside Passage, since 2007!

One year, on our last day, we were heading towards Juneau, Continue reading »

Morning Fog in Slovenia

tharp_20161022-6061

Finally, we had some days without rain – but seriously, some of the most beautiful images we made on this tour were during the rain and during the breaks in between when clouds rose up the hillsides and added mood to the autumn day. It challenged us to work out a system of holding umbrellas while composing and setting our exposures, and watching our front elements Continue reading »

Beautiful Valley, Slovenia

tharp_20161019-5787-88-edit

I don’t profess to know the names of all the beautiful places we are visiting in Slovenia, but I’m having no trouble photographing them! Autumn is just peaking now, yet it’s competing with the rains. We are very lucky to be here at this moment because we have wonderful moody conditions. It is always a challenge to photograph in the rain, but you get used to it and develop a system that works.┬áToday, it’s been snowing up high, but we can’t see anything because of the very low clouds; now and then we get a glimpse of the snowy mountains, and we’re hopeful that tomorrow we’ll have an opportunity to get a clearer view of them with snow.

There is so much rich history in this country, too, and it’s great learning about some of the ‘story’ behind the scenery.

This image was quickly processed on a laptop so it’s not ‘finished’ properly, but you’ll get the idea of how beautiful it is here.

Thanks for visiting!

Slovenia Forests in Autumn

tharp_20161017-5237

This is my tribute to Eliot Porter and a host of other landscape photographers that inspired me when I was learning photography. I was so drawn to the beauty of hardwood forests, (deciduous forests). In Slovenia right now, we are at close to peak, and rains have already taken down some leaves, which actually leaves the forest easier to photograph. I liked how the leaves were accents to the structure of the tree trunks, how we could see into the forest to trees beyond, something that is much harder to do when the leaves are full on the trees. The soft contrast of diffused light also helped me create this scene.

Having fun scouting for our next year’s tour in Slovenia! We’ll be using a pro photographer guide who who knows where to be and when to be there, and we’ll be in great hands for our tour!

Enjoy,
